Lightweight and Compact: With a compact design and a smaller face to face dimension, butterfly valves have a considerably less installation footprint and offer savings in the form of lower installation costs including labour cost, equipment, and piping support.
Low Maintenance Requirements: An inherently simple, economic design that consists of few moving parts, and hence fewer wear points, significantly reduces their maintenance requirements.
Fast Acting: A 90° rotation of the handle, or the actuation mechanism, provides a complete closure or opening of the valve. However, with larger butterfly valves, a gearbox is often required as part of the actuation mechanism which reduces the operational torque and simplifies the operation of the valve but comes at the expense of speed.
Low Cost: Owing to their simple design, butterfly valves require less material and are simpler to design and manufacture and are often the more economical choice compared to other valve types. The cost savings are mainly realized in larger valve sizes, typically above DN 300.
Type
Zero Offset Butterfly Valves
Zero offset butterfly valves, also known as concentric butterfly valves, feature a stem that runs through the centerline of the disc, precisely centered within the resilient seat and the valve body.
Double Offset Butterfly Valve
Double offset butterfly valves, often referred to as high-performance butterfly valves, are engineered with two distinct stem offsets relative to the seat centerline and body centerline.
Triple Offset Butterfly Valve
Triple offset butterfly valves add a third, angular offset to the body’s sealing cone axis in addition to the initial two offsets, producing a right-angled, conical seating geometry.
Wafer Butterfly Valve
Wafer butterfly valves are slim-profile valves that are installed between two pipe flanges. Long through-bolts traverse the valve body, which may have, or lack, external flange holes.
Applications
Backyard Pools
Pools need water delivery and drainage systems that allow for backwashing. Backwashing is when you run water backwards through a system. This dislodges chlorine and other chemicals that build up in pool piping.
Pressurized Applications
When pressurized air or other gases are involved, butterfly valves are perfect! These applications can be tough on valves, especially if they open slowly.
Garden Irrigation Systems
These systems are often made up of PVC or CPVC pipe, with elbows, tees, and couplings connecting everything. They run adjacent to or over the top of backyard gardens and drip water, sometimes enriched with nutrients, onto the plants and vegetables below.
Space-Restrictive Applications
In small spaces, putting together an effective piping system can be challenging. Pipes and fittings don't take up too much room, but equipment like strainers and valves can be unnecessarily clunky. Butterfly valves typically require less space than ball valves and other types of shutoff valves, which makes them perfect for flow control in a tight space!
